The importance of shooting before and after photos

As I sit here in a caravan park in Adelaide contemplating my belly button which by the way hasn’t got any fluff in it. I wanted to share my experience of the importance of shooting before and after photos. Sometimes you will never get the chance to shoot the before shot again, It’s one of those Carpe Diem moments. Just like in landscape photography the time of day can make a huge difference to the image, so capturing the before shots can be a once in a lifetime moment. have a look and see what I mean

Have you ever gone through your images on an unrelated search and found some images that you can barely remember taking. It was a good example of why you should be diligent when importing several jobs that you have taken on the same card before getting the chance to import. When importing just choose the images for each specific folder name, Then come back and import the others into there own named folder. Don’t rely on your memory to do it later. Especially if you are like me . Also the importance of clearly labeling all your folders that will mean something to you in a year or two’s time. Don’t use obscure names or dates. Like the saying goes. “A blunt pencil is better than a good memory”.

Here’s an image I found and thought hmmm I should upload that to my website, I kinda like it and had forgotten I had taken it.

For the past several weeks I haven’t shot any photos. I’ve taken up gardening.

When I get bored ( and broke) I also do commercial SCUBA diving. We’ve been planting Seagrass in Princess Royal Harbour. Part of a rehabilitation project getting ready for the dredging and iron ore exports from Albany. We harvest the seagrass from where they are going to reclaim and dredge and replant it out in the middle of the sound. By the time we finish, we will have planted 1 hectare with a plant being planted at least every metre apart. Spending about 4 hours a day underwater. Brain feels a little water logged.

We dig them in and peg them with a wire hook. Rope to keep us in a straight line and marked off every metre.

Today they let me lose with a camera and here’s a couple of shots shooting for Oceanica.

Last Light Book Launch

Hi all, Well who ever happens to read this.

Tomorrow is the book launch at The Paper Bark formerly known as Angus and Roberts Book Store in York St. Adam and myself will be onsite signing copies purchased on the day. All copies sold enter you into a draw for a 1.2m Canvas image of the front cover picture of the Cheynes 11 Whale chaser. Stretched and ready to hang.

Sales start at 10am to about 1pm out the front of The Paper Bark. Thanks to Hamish and Lockie from the Paper Bark who have thrown there weight behind the launch.

The books only got unpacked from the container on Friday arvo at 3pm. Hamish and Lockie’s father picked some up in Perth and is driving them to Albany. It was a bit of a stress as all the advertising was in place and we weren’t sure we would have the books

The Paper Bark has exclusive sales of the book till christmas.

iPhone for photography

I could have dragged out the Canon EOS 1Ds MKIII and mounted it on a tripod and used the self timer. But why go to all the trouble on a photo that is just for a record, No one is ever going to print. Having said that, Murphy’s law kicks in and someone decides that want it printed. But I figure your better off getting a shot thats OK than not getting anything at all.

I actually printed a canvas print 1.2metres wide from a customers iPhone once and it from a distance you wouldn’t have known.

So my views have changed, I haven’t shot anything on my Canon for nearly a month. The iPhone is better than nothing and it’s always with you (unfortunately) and with my past of dropping my 1Ds MKIII over the side of a boat…. I’m hesitant to take my camera in a small boat.

It’s on it’s way.

After years of thinking about it I finally did it. I have produce a book of images on Albany. Mostly my images and a few of my son Adam. It’s currently in transit from China, Yeah I know but it was so much cheaper than being printed in Australia unfortunately.

I’m wrapped with the quality of the sample books that were sent

No, not hitting the bottom in despair but planting seagrass on the ocean floor. Not much time to take photos at the moment, I’ve just started a month of transplanting seagrass in Princess Royal Harbour in Albany. One of those environmental things. But it will help pay the bills before I head east on a new adventure and a new life.. Spending about 3 hours a day on the sea bed at 3 metres deep

This is now how I dress for work. My camera stays in the camera bag. Don’t take your good camera out in the boat, It may just drop over the side, Not Good, Been there, Done that!

This was taken with my iPhone.

Photography is far more stimulating, We have to plant 40,000 plants and that’s after we have harvested them from an area about to get reclaimed

Now there is nothing special about these picks except I cooked Eggs Benedict in a Weber BBQ. Did another filming trip up near Paynes Find with Steve McGrath.

We filmed on Maranalgo Station, 170,000 acres going for a bargain price of $595,000

It’s great place, Millions of flies love it there, You had to be quick to eat and the flies got stuck in the hollandaise sauce. Black wiggly dots in your yellow sauce
A helpful hint with food preparation in the bush, If you make a salad put sultanas in it, That way the flies look like sultanas and you’ll just eat them and not think about it.Except when they move around in your mouth. Which is better than when they crawl up your nose

Castle Rock

I took my Tafe class for a trek up to Castle Rock in the Porongurup Ranges on the weekend. I wanted to shoot it in different light. So used the opportunity to teach them a bit of Landscape photography. As we waited for the sun to go to bed A large fire burnt near Mt Barker spreading it’s smoke and ruining my shot, Bugga! This means anther trip up the mountain to do it all again. Good thing I don’t mind the exercise.

Today was my final flight doing the annual Southern Right Whale survey ID photography. Albany to Perth via Augusta. With there being plenty of rain recently most of the river and creeks were over flowing out to see with there dark brown water, Here’s a shot along the coast near Augusta, God is such an artist, Don’t you wish you had his creativity and ability to create something new every day.
